What's included

What does downspout cleaning include?

Downspout cleaning means clearing the pipe, the elbows at the top and bottom, and any buried line it drains into. Then each one is hose-tested to prove it runs at full flow. Above-ground downspouts are included with every gutter cleaning we do in Roseville, CA. Underground lines are a separate, quoted add-on.

Clogs follow the trees and the roofs. Homes near Dry Creek, Linda Creek and Miners Ravine sit under oaks. So do the older streets of Diamond Oaks and Old Roseville, and their elbows fill with leaves and acorns. On lots along the Diamond Oaks and Woodcreek golf courses, we even find golf balls. On concrete tile roofs, grit washes down and settles into a heavy sludge.

Here is what a downspout visit covers on a Placer County home:

  • The outlet where the gutter drains into the downspout, or the leader head box on homes that have one, cleared of leaves and grit.
  • The upper elbows under the eave and the lower elbow at the bottom, cleared by hand or with a plumber's snake.
  • A hose flow test on every downspout, top to bottom.
  • Extensions and splash blocks checked, so water lands away from the wall.
  • Underground drain lines tested, and snaked or jetted if they back up.
  • Pop-up emitters at the end of the line opened and cleared.
  • Debris bagged and hauled, with nothing left on walkways or in the flower beds.
  • Photos and a note on each downspout in your report.

You get a real person on the phone and a price before any line work starts. If you only need the gutters cleaned, see our gutter cleaning visit. This page is for the pipes below them. For the order we work in, read how a visit runs, step by step.

Downspout sizes

2×3 or 3×4: which downspouts does your home have?

Most homes have one of two rectangular sizes. A 2×3 inch downspout (actual size about 1.75 x 2.75 inches) usually pairs with 5-inch K-style gutters. A 3×4 inch downspout pairs with 6-inch gutters, according to LeafFilter's downspout size guide. The 3×4 carries noticeably more water and clogs less often.

That difference matters in Roseville. Many tract homes built in the 1990s and 2000s have 5-inch gutters with the smaller 2×3 downspouts. A 2×3 handles normal rain on a modest roof. But a single London plane leaf or a few acorns can close most of its opening. When a big storm dumps water fast, a 2×3 that is even half blocked can't keep up, and the gutter spills over.

If a downspout keeps clogging after every cleaning, the fix may be a larger downspout or an extra one on a long run. That's a repair job for the gutter itself, quoted on site.

Where clogs start

Why do most downspout clogs start at the elbows?

Most clogs start at a bend, not in the straight pipe. Water drops fast down the straight section, then slows at the elbow, and leaves, acorns and sludge stop there. A typical downspout has two elbows at the top, where it steps back toward the wall. It has one more at the bottom, where it turns out toward the yard.

What we pull out of Roseville elbows most often:

  • Acorns and oak tassels from valley, blue and live oaks along Dry Creek and Linda Creek.
  • Matted plane and pistache leaves that fold over and wedge in the bend.
  • Redwood needles that pack into a dense plug.
  • Tile grit and dirt that turn into sludge after the first storm.
  • Odd things: tennis balls, nests, and on golf-course lots, the odd golf ball.

The tree species come from the City of Roseville's own street tree count in its Urban Forest Master Plan. For a full list of what falls here, by season, read what clogs Roseville gutters.

Underground blockage

How do you know a downspout is blocked underground?

If water backs up out of the downspout while the pop-up emitter at the far end of the yard stays dry, the buried line is probably blocked. Gurgling, water bubbling out of a joint at ground level, or a soggy strip of lawn along the line are other signs. You can check most of this from the ground.

Five signs to check in the rain

  1. The emitter is dry while the downspout is full.
  2. Water spills over the gutter right above the downspout, but not along the rest of the run.
  3. The downspout gurgles or burps instead of running steady.
  4. Water seeps out where the downspout meets the ground pipe.
  5. A strip of lawn stays soggy for days, or a small sinkhole forms along the line.

The hose test

Unhook the downspout from the ground pipe if it has a coupling. Run a garden hose into the ground pipe for a couple of minutes. If water comes back up instead of flowing away, the line is blocked. On the downspout itself, water from a hose at the top should run down and out of the bottom in a steady stream.

The penny test

On an above-ground downspout, drop a penny or a small stone in the top from a safe ladder spot and listen. A clear downspout lets it fall straight through and out the bottom. If it stops partway, there's a clog at an elbow.

When to stop and call

Don't climb in wet or windy weather to try any of this. Leave two-story downspouts and anything buried to a crew. More warning signs, including the ones on the gutter itself, are in our guide to signs your gutters are clogged.

Underground lines

What are corrugated lines and pop-up emitters?

They are the buried part of many Roseville downspouts. A pipe, often black corrugated plastic, carries water to a pop-up emitter in the lawn or out to the curb. The ridges that let corrugated pipe bend also catch grit and leaves, so these lines clog more easily than smooth pipe.

A pop-up emitter is a small cap at the end of the line. When water fills the pipe, the cap lifts and lets water out onto the lawn, then drops shut to keep dirt and critters out. Emitters fail in three ways:

  • Grass and soil grow over them.
  • The cap jams shut with silt.
  • The line before them fills with sludge, so no water reaches them at all.

We find the emitter, clear it, and run water from the downspout end to prove the whole line flows. If a line runs to the curb, we check the outlet there too. We don't flush debris into the street gutter, because Roseville storm drain inlets flow to local creeks like Dry Creek and Linda Creek.

How we clear lines

How does underground downspout cleaning work?

Underground downspout cleaning usually starts with a hand or powered drain snake, and most blocked lines clear that way. Packed sludge and long corrugated runs often need hydro jetting, which pushes a high-pressure water hose through the line to scour it. Roots are the hard case. They can be cut back, but they often grow back unless the damaged pipe is replaced.

One note on wording: jetting a downspout line is not the same job as the drain cleaning services in Roseville, CA that plumbers sell for sinks and sewer lines. We clear the rainwater side only. If a toilet or kitchen drain is backing up, call a plumber.

Roots find their way into lines that leak or have loose joints. Trees planted close to the house in older neighborhoods like Old Roseville and Diamond Oaks are the usual source. If a section has to be dug up, California requires a call to 811 first, with at least two working days' notice (USA North 811). We handle that before we start. Clay soil and extensions

Why does downspout water have to land away from the house?

Roseville sits on expansive clay soil that “absorbs moisture like a sponge” in the rainy season and shrinks in summer, which puts pressure on foundations, according to This Old House. Foundation repair here runs about $1,800 for minor work and $6,800 or more for complex jobs.

A downspout that dumps water right at the wall soaks the clay at the slab edge every storm. That is how foundation heave and cracks start. The fix is simple: move the water away from the house.

OptionWhat it doesWorks well for
Splash blockSpreads the water and stops it digging a hole at the baseDownspouts over a bed or lawn near the wall
ExtensionCarries water a few feet out; hinged ones flip up for the mowerSide yards and corners where water pools
Underground lineCarries water to a pop-up emitter or the curbTight lots, patios and walkways, as long as the line stays clear

We check that every downspout ends on a block, an extension or a working line, and photograph any that dump at the wall. For the full story, read our guide to gutters, clay soil and foundations.

Timing

When should downspouts be checked in Roseville?

Check them every fall with the gutter cleaning, before the first big storm. Almost all of Roseville's rain falls from October to April, and February is the wettest month at about 4.6 inches (WeatherSpark). A downspout that is clear in November is ready for it.

Two more times are worth a quick look. After the first heavy storm, check that every emitter pops and no elbow gurgles. In March and April, after oak tassels and pear blossoms drop, homes under oaks often need the elbows cleared again. If you'd like that done on a schedule, a twice-a-year plan covers it.

Downspout cleaning prices

How much does downspout cleaning cost in Roseville?

Flushing and testing above-ground downspouts is included in every gutter cleaning. That runs about $120 to $225 in Roseville, or about $190 for 200 feet of gutter, according to This Old House. Underground lines are priced per line and quoted before we start.

Common questions

What Roseville homeowners ask us

Call us (916) 555-0123

Yes. On every cleaning we flush the downspouts and flow-test each one, so you can see it draining freely before we leave. Blocked elbows are cleared at no extra charge. Underground lines that need a snake or hydro jetting are quoted separately, and you approve the price first. Your photo report notes any downspout that drained slowly.

Often, yes. Pull the bottom elbow off if it's held by screws, clear it by hand, then run a hose down from the top. Our step-by-step unclogging guide shows each move. A plumber's snake pushed up from the bottom works for deeper clogs. Stop and call if you need a ladder on a two-story home or the clog is underground.

Standing water in a downspout means something below it is blocked, usually the lower elbow or the buried line. Still water also gives mosquitoes a place to breed, and Placer County reported a West Nile virus death in October 2025. A hose test from the top tells you whether the blockage is above ground or below it, and where to start.

Sometimes. A strainer at the outlet stops big leaves from entering the downspout, which helps 2×3 downspouts under oaks and plane trees. But the strainer itself clogs and can make the gutter overflow faster in a downpour. If you add one, check it after every big storm. Guards matched to your trees are usually the better fix for heavy leaf fall.

Clogged downspout repair starts with clearing and testing the line to find where it fails. Then we quote replacing the damaged section, above ground or below. Smooth-wall pipe holds up better than corrugated and is easier to clean later. Any digging starts with an 811 call so buried gas, power and water lines are marked first.

Test them every fall with a hose when the gutters are cleaned. Lines that drain clean gutters may run for years without trouble. Lines under oaks or redwoods, or on homes that went years without a gutter cleaning, often need clearing every year or two. A dry emitter during a storm is the sign yours is due.

Yes. A large roof section draining into one 2×3 downspout can overflow in heavy rain even when everything is clean. Adding a second downspout or switching to a 3×4 usually fixes it. We note it in your photo report if a run looks undersized, and price the change before any work is done.
